But then there is no way at all for the public to know whether a therapist is making any effort at all to work within the accepted treatment modalities and current knowledge as it develops. If someone can't be bothered to join a society they could easily be very peripheral or unconcerned with developing knowledge. Members of professional societies are more likely, in my opinion, to be reading and attending conferences. And though that does't have to be true obviously, it is at least one barometer.
