What I tell people is that no part has to be in the conference room if it doesn't want to - it has had enough of being forced.

Parts that want to listen but not be in the conference room can be in a waiting area, or listen outside the door, or stand behind a plexiglass shield. The waiting room is most often used and its quite perfect. It has a speaker and glass so parts can see and hear without having to come into the room prematurely.

Its absolutely the case that some ego states can't be in the room at the same time.

Some apparently positive states can't be tolerated because of some landmine --- hope may be experienced as a step just before crushing disappointment.

The key is attunement and resonance with the state of the states -- ego states that is. And providing that which will make states feel safe and strong enough to take the next small step.
