Thanks for sharing your experience. As a therapist who works with individuals who have suffered trauma I have found there is no replacement for following the client's process due to the variations in experience from one client to the next, and due to variations in the process of working thru trauma. This includes EMDR which I have offered for several years. The other side of the coin,(from your experience) is that most of the clients I now see prefer and seem to benefit greatly from needs development or some kind of preliminary resource building, prior to taking on trauma. I now do that first for most of my client. Of course individuals respond differently,(this approach didn't work for you) and that's why there is the need to follow client process/response, and review the approach when things are not working. This is particularly true with Disorders of Extreme Stress like DID and complex PTSD.
Thanks again. I find I learn the best lessons from clients and their experience. Bill Peifer
