The false memories debate has been discussed here and perhaps sufficiently. It often seems that the mythical “false memories syndrome” cruelly attacks victims of abuse. The above article presented with layman’s concepts the reality of how memories and reactions can be manipulated. It seems that no one has clearly emphasized how the same research can support abuse victims’ claims and account for some of their inconsistencies, errors, and recanting of allegations. Manipulations can cause false memories, induce amnesia, and create distorted recollections. Perpetrators have utilized the same tactics described in the article to cover their abuses and to induce guilt, shame, and false confessions. EMDR and this forum have been supportive of victims of abuse. Implementing limits concerning the latitude of discussions is understandable. I would not be offended if you delete these posts and would support your action.
