Readers are referred to the new Practice Guidelines for the International Society for the Study of Traumatic Stress (Guilford Press) which has designated EMDR as effective for PTSD. Also stated in these guidelines is the fact that EMDR is not conducted as traditional exposure therapies. For whatever reason, EMDR is an effective treatment. Future studies are needed to shed light on a variety of questions, but they are ancillary to the effectiveness question. The Devilly & Spence study is only one of four studies directly comparing EMDR and cbt. It is the only negative outlier. A discussion of its problems is available in the Archives.
