I recall that many of the early participants in EMDR training were clinicians of a cognitive-behavioral orientation. Many had prior training in some variant of Exposure. Most respondents (I don't remember the percentage) preferred EMDR to exposure. This is not exactly comparable to a crowd that would go to psychics. (At this point, though, EMDR has become more mainstream, and a wider variety of clinicians have obtained the training.) If Shapiro's only contribution turns out to be that she has repackaged the same old stuff, this would still be a huge service. Many clinicians have learned EMDR who would have been unlikely to learn other structured trauma treatment methods. Acceptability of a treatment is a relevant feature of a treatment, because more acceptable treatments are more likely to be learned and used.
