Of course, "do no harm" and "better safe than sorry" are perfectly fine motto's. I don't see how insisting that clinical practice be based on sound scientific research contradicts either one. Indeed, I would say that these motto's represent quite well the philosophy of skeptics. Advancing treatment techniques without data is potentially harmful, even if the treatment technique is inocuous because people waste their money and resources and may end up not getting the appropriate help, if such is available. Now don't inteprete the above as meaning that I think EMDR doesn't work, because the data show it does. However, the data have yet to show that some of the supposed unique features (eye movments, bilateral stimulation, dual attention, etc.) are in fact active ingredients.
