I am approaching a first session with an EMDR therapist later this week. I'm gay, and one of the main things I hope to deal with in therapy is to heal from having come out to myself in great isolation and fear when I was an adolescent. It was a terrible time, and cut me off from my beloved family, a number of friends, my own self-esteem, religious upbringing, etc, etc, etc. On the surface I dealt with all of it, but internally there's still a strong thread of pain, depression, shame and anger that gets in the way of relationships and feeling "real." I'm tired of struggling with this and hope very much that EMDR can help. Does anyone have any experience with or comments about the usefulness of EMDR in treating the stress of minority status and social marginalization experiences like "coming out"? thanks -
Jan
