As I've been reading about EMDR, and undergoing EMDR treatment, I have realized that I, initially, had been confused by terminology and I'm wondering if other persons have/might experience this. For example, not to be critical by any means, looking at the archives post by Shapiro on the 8 Phases of EMDR we read "an EMDR treatment session." For me - I was equating an EMDR treatment session with a therapy session.(one therapy session = one EMDR session) That's not quite how it is. A therapy session may be used to do bilateral stimualation, however, that is just one aspect of EMDR and not a full EMDR session. The phases of EMDR, which make up a full EMDR (treatment) session can take many therapy sessions. Perhaps a number of therapy sessions might be used for bilateral stimulation, however, in other therapy sessions other aspects of EMDR are being addressed. For eg. - I recently realized that my therapist has been doing resource installation (using cognitive interweaves, I think - not sure if I fully understand this). Also, We spent one therapy session doing eye movements and spent the next therapy session talking about my experiences and did not do any eye movements on that day. The time spent talking, however, was still a part of the EMDR (treatment) session. I was thinking that EMDR was moving slowly for me as we weren't spending every therapy session doing bilateral stimulation.(and I never fully recognized other work as being components of EMDR) Well, as I stated earlier, I now realize that an EMDR (treatment) session is not the same as a therapy session. An EMDR session to target a particular memory can take place over a number of (or many) therapy sessions as the 8 phases of EMDR are not that simple. One phase might take a number of therapy sessions, another phase a few more therapy sessions and so forth. Perhaps instead of using the word "session" it might lessen confusion, and clarify expectations, to say "an EMDR treatment plan" or "the EMDR technique" or "the EMDR approach". Perhaps, too, a bit more continued emphasis on the fact that there are 8 Phases to EMDR treatment and that any one of these Phases could take more than one therapy session. So much for clarity - this post is probably even more confusing! I would appreciate if someone could give an explantion on cognitive interweaves - what are they, how they are presented, a few examples and any other information you can provide. Thanks.
