Thanks Sandra, That's pretty much what I've been feeling about it. I guess what I have been told is that if a client isn't ready for emdr then you do lots of rdi to prepare them to do it. And sometimes I think that is valid but for this particular client I am not so sure. It is hard though - I have tried rdi with her many times and had good success with desensitizing a certain trigger that urgently needed to be dealt with - she would pass out wherever she was if she saw a certain item and it was a safety issue among other concerns. And there were times the start that we did rdi with good success but there has been the odd time that I tried and she seemed to go somewhere unsafe feeling or would seem a little spaced out afterwards and I felt it just is not a good treatment option for her, so stopped. The thing about nightmares showing that bilateral stimulation is distressing in some respects makes sense though I also believe I have heard of using emdr to deal with nightmares which seems a little contradictory. I guess it just depends on what the whole big picture says rather than the one symptom per se. Thanks for your feedback. Kind of confirms what I've been feeling.
