Your question really illustrates why ego state work is key for successful EMDRs for some people. Ego states (or alters, in the case of DID) can "interfere" with EMDR if they are not on board with the treatment plan, haven't agreed to do EMDR or work on a trauma, don't know who the therapist is, etc. Laying the groundwork and people able to mediate between ego states in the middle is key to successful outcome in my opinion. Please note that conventional cognitive interweave as taught in the part II training through the Institute is often effective without specifically pulling for ego states, but accomplishes the same result.
