The following is not an official EMDR Institute position, but it is my position and has been so since 1992 when I started giving talks on ego state therapy and EMDR. 1) I find that ego state interventions are the Mother of all Cognitive Interweaves. Almost all looping EMDR sessions can be gotten unstuck by asking the client to look in an internal conference room and saying what s/he sees, what's going on in there, what the mood is, etc, and continuing to work with what presents itself. 2) In highly dissociative conditions, this internal conference room may not initially be available as it is blocked by a dissociative process. Still, an ego state approach can negotiate with this blocking for good resolution. 3) I present a two day workshop on ego state approaches, that is co-sponsored by the EMDR Institute and credit approved by EMDR International Association, for which I am a certified instructor. So apparently it is not considered irrelevant or far afield for EMDR work! 4) this forum has had many prior discussions of ego state work. If you post specific questions, I will try to answer as best I can in this forum. Please note I'll not make case specific recommendations but rather only make general comments about this or that situation. In sum, ego state discussions are welcome here as long as they tie to EMDR practice.
