I can make some general comments that apply but must refrain from commenting on your case in particular. When people have old trauma to work on and new things crop up, it is not unusual for the new things to take attention away from the old business. Sometimes, the old business would be more important than the new, its just that the new is currently in our face so demands attention. In such cases, it may be best to deal with the present life demands and get back to the old business later when things settle down. For other people, the present things are distressing because they are reminders of old traumatic events from childhood. In such cases, clearing out the old will make the new issues more manageable in present time, without the "old baggage" feeling underneath. So you see, it really is a case by case thing. As always, talking to your therapist about these questions is key.
