I'd add one point to Dr. Greenwald's comprehensive list of cautionary statements. Individuals who have complex childhood trauma histories sometimes (not always by any means) have dissociative disorders. Individuals with dissociative disorders can be very much benefited by the proper use of EMDR if: 1) the EMDR qualified therapist is also experienced and trained in the treatment of dissociative disorders and 2) the protocol for the use of EMDR with dissociative disorders is used.
