As one who produces CDs and tapes incorporating bilateral sound (music and ocean waves for instance) they are meant to be used as an in session form of bilateral stimulation, as are tones, tactile stimulation and of course the original - eye movements. They are being used around United States and in many foreign countries with considerable positive feedback. A review has recently been completed which is now being tabulated. At times, EMDR therapists report that their clients are only experiencing a relaxation effect and not processing. The survey indicates that most clients respond with processing. It may be that the relaxation response reported is either a more gentle form of processing (one of the goals of the CDs), a way station on the road to more powerful processing if the process is not interupted, or a partial sidetracking (which can be tested and often ameliorated by a return to target and a retaking of the suds level. Out of session use can be valuable for insomnia, agitation and pain but should be determined by the treating EMDR therapist (home targeting of loaded material is discouraged). Criteria for such usage include: positive response to Cds in session, absense of dissociative identity disorder or powerful abreative response, responsible client supervision and usage.
