Yes there is certification. It is granted by the EMDR International Association to therapists who have completed an approved training course, had a minimum amount of additional EMDR-related continuing education, had a minimum amount of post-training supervised experience, and been recommended for certification by professional peers. Although certification is no guarantee that the therapist is any good, or that the therapist (even if good) will be the right one for you, it does at least set a standard. Personally if I didn't know the therapists, I would start with certified ones to find one I liked, before looking at others. There are also good therapists who haven't gotten certified yet. However, it's very important that they have been trained by an EMDRIA-approved source. Some training programs provide the whole training as a single package; other programs split the training up. So you will also want to find out if the therapist has had the full training, or just the first half (which might be called "basic", "beginning", or "level 1"). The EMDR International Association <http://www.emdria.org> maintains a listing of EMDR-certified therapists.
