I'm confused about Brian's references to eye movements, when it's bi-lateral stimulation that is necessary. Is he not aware of this? He also discounts lots of research, with no apparent reason. Many of the concerns he gives have no bearing on most EMDR studies, and other reasons are issues for all psych tx studies. There seems to be an accusation of "adding things to treatment to get rich". Most of us--all the therapists I know--work hard to find the most effective treatments for our patients. I initially thought EMDR was absurd, and refused to even look at the research--till I reached the end of my effectiveness with some adult sexual abuse survivors, sent then to a collegue who claimed to have results with EMDR, and saw the results. Then I read the research--and I've read everything available, and am struck by Brian's lack of acceptance of much of it. We all know how hard it is to do psych tx research, and much of this is very good. I do CBT, and I do EMDR, and they are both helpful--but they don't do the same thing.
