My girlfriend is beginning EMDR today. Her trauma is related to the sudden loss of her parents about 8 years ago. Her symptoms: She hardly sleeps w/o medication. She drinks water all the time. She can hardly sit still. From the little I know about EMDR, I am expecting her moods to change quite a bit if she responds to the therapy. I imagine that as her consciousness is awakened to the painful and sad emotions she has been suppressing all these years, she will spend a great deal of time depressed and grieving. I'm not looking forward to this, but I believe that what's most important is that she gets past her trauma. I want to support her through this. Are my expectations of how her moods will change correct? Any suggestions on what role I should play in supporting her through what I imagine will be a difficult healing process?
