The biggest problem I have with EMDR is all the hype about people being cured in three sessions (or whatever number they assign). It sets people up for false hopes and expectations. On the listserv I see this echoed by others. EMDR is a very effective treatment but it works differently for each person. The distresses that lead me to counseling were 38 years in the making. We are finding that there are several underlying causes to my PTSD and we are working on them one step at a time. The key to EMDR is a close working relationship with your therapist and a strong bond of trust. I have come a long ways and I know I still have a ways to go but I do not put time limits on my healing.
