Clinical reports indeed show a difference when bilateral stimulation is used. The component analysis research, however, is very faulty and has yet to use appropriate populations and a sufficient number of subjects to ascertain anything. For instance, the Renfrey and Spates (1994) article compared EMDR with eye movements from following the therapist hand, following a lightbar, or staring at a dot. The eye movement conditions found that 85% not longer had PTSD compared to 50% with the lightbar, but there were only 7-8 subjects per cell so the findings for rapidity of effect were only marginally significant. Hopefully, appropriate research will be done in the future. The lightbars were sold only after a 2 year fieldtest with 50 clinicians. The clinicians verified its usefulness with no negative effects reported.
