I had been in therapy for 4 years for childhood sexual abuse beginning at age 2 or 3, with good results except for a lingering phobia. I decided to try EMDR specifically for the phobia, and am working with a Level 2 therapist whom I like very much. Originally, she stated that I would see relief after 6-8 sessions, but now claims she was incorrect in assuming that, considering the young age at which the abuse occured, and the complexities of the phobia. I admire her honesty, but question her qualifications now. I had great hopes for EMDR, and have recovered memories and details in these sessions that I never had before, and without any lasting life-intrusive effects as I had in the "talk" therapy. BUT the phobia remains, and has not lost its "charge." Any suggestions? Are there any studies showing what cases using EMDR will take longer than the expected short-term therapy?
