Your comments were a long time ago, but my recent experience required me to make a point. I am using emdr to help w/ childhood abuse from an alcoholic father. I have done a "wonderful" job controlling and suppressing my emotions over the years, so much so as to lead to a chronic unhappiness. It was a struggle to tap into the emotions, but I felt emdr was my best hope. I finally engaged old emotions by entering through the back door of a recent anger generating event. This allowed be to break down my defenses and start processing very difficult experiences. I'm only part way there, but can see the light at the end of the tunnel. THick emotional guards can be unwound but you have to keep at it and you need a counselor who knows what they are doing.
