Treating a trauma is often like removing a quilt from the mattress--then you get to see all other other problems that exist. After many years of abuse, and many years of emotional pain caused by PTSD, the relief of the overt suffering now reveals other issues that must be addressed. It is necessary to view this as a journey towards full health. Now it is time to explore the earlier events in your life that may be blocking these feelings, and that allowed you to be in that long and abusive relationship in the first place. You and your clinician need to explore the entire clinical picture--not just the abusive incidents that caused the pronounced PTSD symptoms. EMDR can be applied to these incidents with the full protocols used for overall personal enhancement.
