There is only one controlled study of EMDR with combat veterans that used the suggested number of sessions: Carlson, et al. (1998) tested the effect of EMDR on chronic combat veterans suffering from PTSD since the Vietnam War. Within 12 session subjects showed substantial clinical improvement, with a number becoming symptom-free. EMDR proved superior to a biofeedback relaxation control group and to a group receiving routine VA clinical care. Results were independently evaluated on CAPS-1, Mississippi Scale for PTSD, IES, PTSD Symptom Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and STAI. Positive clinical fidelity to treatment was externally assessed and the drop-out rate was @ 3%. This is the only study of combat veterans to achieve acceptable fidelity and to use the number of EMDR sessions suggested for this population (see Shapiro, 1995). Carlson, J.G., Chemtob, C.M., Rusnak, K., Hedlund, N.L., & Muraoka, M.Y. (1998). Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing for combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder. Journal of Traumatic Stress, 11, 3-24. For referrals to clinicians in your area contact the EMDR Institute at inst@emdr.com or call 831/372-3900. They will give you a list of all trained clinicians in your area. You just need to call the clinicians to find someone who feels comfortable using EMDR with your problem. For information on which V.A. centers use EMDR call: Howard Lipke 847/537-7423 or Steven Silver 610/384-7711 x 4007 V.A. treatment is available inpatient or outpatient but not all centers use EMDR. The first vet I treated is now 10 years free of symptoms. You can get more information by taking a look at the controlled study, reading the vet chapter in the paperback "EMDR," or talking to Drs. Lipke or Silver. They both use EMDR in the V.A. system and have treated vets with EMDR for many years now. It really can help.
There are many clinicians who are using EMDR with combat veterans. It is being used at a number of V.A. hospitals and vet centers and by individual clinicians.
