Success with EMDR is not limited to only single-event truamas. Many clients have experienced a number of traumas or earlier disturbing events and have had very successful EMDR therapy. There is indeed a difference between knowing that something happened and reprocessing it. One lets you understand "why"--the other liberates you from the experience. Successful processing means that what is useful is learned and stored with appropriate emotion and can guide you in the future. What is useful is gone: the negative emotions, beliefs, sensations, behaviors, etc. Your clinician can help guide you to the events that need to be processed. The prerequisite for treatment is having a clinician that is fully trained in EMDR and comfortable with your problem. It won't be a three-session dash to the finish, however. Just take it one step at a time.
