There are many problems that can occur from untrained clinicians trying to do EMDR without enough information, but I will list a brief handful of some of the worst outcomes that can occur: 1) Since it is a process, and not a moment in time, the clinician might get confused or spooked and quit in the middle, which would be like a surgery quitting in the middle of surgery, just after making the incision, without closing up. 2) The untrained clinician might fail to assess for dissociative disorders and use the wrong protocol, precipitating a suicide attempt or success by stimulating alters that have no knowledge of or consent for the procedure. 3) Failing to appropriately target, process and complete a trauma may result in opening up deep reservoirs of pain without resolving them, causing retraumatization of the client. 4) Inability to know how to handle abreactions can cause re traumatization to the client and clinician. There are others but I'll stop there for now.
