I seem to have a great resistance to therapeutic intervention and in the past have not profited much from traditional therapy. As soon as there begins to be progress, defenses fly up - including deriding the therapy and therapist - and I retreat. I don't think I have any major traumas hidden in my past, but I've got a lot of something, especially anger.
My emotional resistance (defense) is manifest in writing block, lack of intimate relationships, feelings of emptiness and depression, etc.
I began emdr around 6 weeks ago and have been working (with a light bar) for around 4 sessions. My therapist has said that I should not expect results in the oft-mentioned 3 sessions. She thinks we should try about a dozen times before deciding if it's working.
My question is simply is there any reason to think that emdr will be more effective at breaking through my defenses than other things I've tried.
thanks for any suggestions
