Dear Stephen, although you can do some work with children on their self-statements and thoughts and there are tons of good books for working with cbt and kids (try research press for example) research has shown you get more bang for your buck if you work with the parents. That is especially true for externalizing disorders but also very helpful for internalizing disorders. The techniques for the parents are behaviorally based, however the problem is that parents often struggle to implement them. That seems to be because parents have various schemas that get in the way of them being able to set limits and other parenting tasks. Chuck Elliott and I have written a book to help parents with that part of the problem. The book is called "Why Can't I Be the Parent I Want to Be?"
