I consider it important for cognitive therapists to assess negative affect (depression, anxiety, and anger)accurately and frequently so that we, our clients, and any third parties can track progress and monitor the results of cognitive interventions. The Beck inventories on depression and anxiety are useful, as are the SCL-90-R and the State-Trait Anger Inventory (STAXI).
In order to assess all three constructs conveniently, I developed the Negative Affect Scan (NAS, which assesses all three NA constructs in one instrument. I find the NAS very useful and hope to submit my findings on its psychometric properties to a major journal soon.
