I agree that there are some glib and even harmful elements to the culture of psychotherapy and its use as a tool for social progress aimed at the upper and middle classes. However, on an individual level, helping bring people back into communities by removing the stigma and despair of unemployment can only help. This is not accomplished by psychotherapy via glib greedy shrinks who care not about the welfare of their clients and violate ethics on a daily basis with no one to answer to except licensing boards which are nothing but paper mills issuing paper which says a shrink is qualified and follows un enforced ethics. American culture is notoriously individualistic and "self-reliant," which means among other things that we tend to blame the poor for being poor. This isn't just a result of "survival of the fittest" ideology, it is also consistent with the subset of Protestant mentality that professes "the Saved can take care of themselves." Yes and the upper middle and middle classes also blame mentally ill or distressed people for their emotional distress. Especially and including social workers and psychologists. I can say this for first hand experience and it happens in this here forum all the time with their false sense of empathy while they verbally batter those whom have been abused by therapists and want to talk about it to help change attitudes. They glibly abuse people who have been harmed by psychotherapists and in the next breath take a holier than thou attitude that because they are a social worker or psychologist, they are helping people and as such are exempt from not criticizing people who criticize the psychotherapy industry. What they don’t care about, is that is a human being on the other end and they say things like, such people are freak shows, or pathetic, etc. etc. In north america, if you don't have at least 80 dollars an hour to spend on therapy then one is balmed for not taking care of themself emotionally. I am sick to death of shrinks who pretend to care and then berate those whom they claim they care about. And also sick of shrinks who brainwash their clients into dis connecting from their loved ones, just because they choose to not see a shrink or because they dis agree with the shrinks therapy methods and ethics. Or because they can't afford it. Or all of the above. You shrinks think that you should automatically be trusted by everyone on the planet. What have you done to deserve, to earn that trust? Which planet are you all from?
