You have touched upon the key issue. The psychotherapist's stock in trade are his vulnerable clients. In simple, concrete terms: if a therapist can retain a client "in need" for weekly sessions at the rate of $150.00, the therapist could afford the monthly payment on a new Porsche. In this manner, the needs of the therapist are met by the needs of the cllient.
