Hi Adam, I trained for the post-graduate diploma in art therapy at the University of Hertfordshire. The other place in London is Goldsmiths College. The training is a post-graduate training, and the entry requirements are clearly stated by each college. The British Association of Art Therapists might help you with this. The post-graduate diploma is currently being negotiated to make it an automatic Masters Degree training. In my time, the post-graduate diploma training is followed by a further year (plus thesis) to get Masters recognition. When I applied the entry requirements stated that applicants needed a first degree in either art, education, psychology or social work, plus at least 5 years clinical experience, plus a portfolio to prove you have established yourself as an artist in your own right. Having said that, I think I was the only one on my training that met these requirements as every individual cv can bring new experiences into the profession. Clinical experience can be wide and varied. This includes carework, support teaching, hospital volunteering, youth work, prison work. Think of the prospective clients, and find yourself a place within an organisation that will enable you to have an opportunity to work with people, optimally doing creative/expressive work with them. The more client-contact type experience you have, the more you will get of out the training. Wishing you all the best. If you want to check out my website - its www.art4theheart.com Hephzibah Kaplan
