Hello all! It seems to me that this forum is geared toward professionals and more advanced students than myself. However, I'll give it a shot. I am a freshman at Cornell University. I have decided that I would like to pursue art therapy. However, there seem to be a variety of paths I could take toward this end. I could stay at Cornell and major in art and/or psych, and then go enter one of the handful of graduate art therapy programs. I am interested in George Washington University's five year B.A./M.A. program in art therapy. There also are a few colleges that offer undergraduate study in art therapy. Do any of you know what schools offer the best training? What schools have the best reputation? Is the GWU program good, or should I stay at Cornell and pursue this issue when I'm looking to go to graduate school? I think my parents would like if I stayed at Cornell to get the prestigious diploma. What cities are good cities to be in for studying and/or practicing art therapy? I am a bit scared by some of your pleas for work...I think I, too, have an image of a future of immediately entering a successful and satisfying job as an art therapist after school. Aside from successfully completing my final exams in the next couple of weeks (hehehe), this is the biggest issue in my life right now. I adore art, I love psych, I love the more holistic approach to healing, and I really think I would enjoy art therapy! I would be more greatful than you can imagine if someone in the field could help me find a path!
Thanks,
Katie
P.S. I am from Southeastern VA. Is there anyone within a few hour radius from there who practices some form of art therapy and would allow a college student to come visit with them to get a better understanding of the field? Has anyone heard of such an idea?
