Yes, there are *specifics* on sandplay or as some call it, sandtray. There are different schools of thought, some of which say that the sandtray must be a certain dimension and depth. Others are more free in their use of various sizes and shapes of sandtrays-- I have several, some are rectangular and others are circular. When I work bedside with children in hospital, a rectangular pan is useful, one that fits the size of the tray table. I don't know of an Internet site off hand, but I am sure if you look around, you might find the international group and they probably have a website. Dora Kolff wrote a seminal book on this modality; a more recent book just came out called Sandplay Therapy and it looks fairly practical and contains a great deal of basic information. Linda Homeyer also wrote a good book on the use of sand tray in therapy, from a play therapist's perspective. Hope this helps.
