Perhaps I'm a bit late in responding, but I just thought I'd share what I found in the way of "cheapie miniatures." I spent about $20 on some play dough, a package of plastic soldiers and an army tank, and a menagerie of dinosaurs, zoo animals and farm animals. THese combined with the playdough have been effective in providing the necessary "props" for a wide variety of play scenarios. Add to this a set of "Jenga" blocks (the stacking game), and a child can improvise almost anything. In addition to being cheap and durable, they are lightweight, small and easy to come by. Plus, the collection makes quite a coffee table scene for my office. And for added laughs, after the child has left, I sit down and rearrange them (back to the War of the Little Green Men vs. the Disproportionately Sized Amphibians) and invariably, another clinician walks by and sees me on the floor "playing" with my dinosaurs.
