CREATIVE ARTS THERAPY INTERNATIONAL FORUM ARCHIVE, 1999
Art Tx in Medical Settings
Dear Heather,I can imagine that setting up your program is really challenging. Educating doctors about the benefits of Art Therapy is a full-time job! I found it effective to find ready converts and get them to approach their own colleagues was also helpful. I worked exclusively with adults coping with illness, and I also found art therapy very effective with this population, helping them look at the monumental impacts of their illness experience and the personal changes which resulted. I also found that patients who had a history of sexual abuse re-experienced the sense of powerlessness and personal damage through their illness and medical interventions. I have finished my training now, and am starting a private practice in Smithers, B.C.. you (or anyone reading this) may feel free to email me at rmurdoch@bulkley.net. I would love to hear more about your work. Regards, Ruth
