Maybe because that's the one affect that men are not allowed in our culture? And distress, when mutualized is a very connecting feeling---so is interest-excitement and enjoyment-joy---but, somehow the bitter-sweetness of distress when shared with another is a deeply connecting, spiritual thing. I wonder if the reason that men experience higher rates of "agitation" when bombarded with distress affect is that they are denied the ability to feel it even though it is plainly there.
