I find it quite interesting to speak of the Latino male pride. I work with inmates within a modified therapeutic community, close custody security, mainly focusing on substance abuse issues - I find most of the issues have resulted from shame based/guilt feelings. Reference the Latin pride, I had a client that admitted to doing physical harm to a "best friend" due to being put down in front of peers. He felt he had to do something, anything, to protect the image. Due to the retained feelings of guilt and shame he quickly found a substance to help him forget - for awhile. The image appears to be extremely important in Latin and black men. In the prison setting, physical and verbal violence are more likely to result from the protection of male pride than from the evening meal.
