Don, thank you for your generous compliments of my struggling efforts to make germane and respectful comments along with everyone else who shows a willingness to do the same. You certainly have given me a lot to think about, now, too. In particular I am grateful for the emphasis you placed on the importance of not using "defense" language. I am suprised-startled that I missed the fact that you omit the language of defense in your writings. It just goes to show how prepossessing are the outdated Freudian assumptions even among people like me who claim to have abandoned faith in Freud's ideas. It is especically heartening to see how clearly you discern those many aspects of Chauncey's approach that I, too, most appreciate. And thanks again for your work on behave of this fascinating project of making Tomkins's and your work so available to us.
