Your mother is fortunate to have supportive children who are seeking information on how to help her heal from the symptoms of childhood sexual abuse. I specialize in treating people who have experienced traumatic events, and EMDR is the most effective and efficient therapy I have learned in the past 22 years. The time frame for healing is different for each person and family system. Healing from multiple incidents of childhood sexual abuse by multiple abusers, is usually a process that takes many sessions. But in my experience, after treating hundreds of women and men suffering from symptoms caused by childhood sexual abuse, all made significant improvements using EMDR. Before EMDR, treatment took much longer, and was not as effective. Have you asked your EMDR therapist for an opinion on how long your mother's therapy may take? You are already helping your mother by being interested and caring enough to post this message. Ask your mother directly how you may be of help to her. Your therapist may have some specific ideas as well. General guidelines are the following: honor her feelings, respect her wants and needs, believe her, show her acceptance and unconditional love, allow her to make her own decisions, empower her, let her set boundaries around touch, recognize her strengths and the courage it takes to enter into the healing process, remind her in the difficult times that the sun will shine again. Healing is possible!
