Your question is a good one and points up the need for constant feedback between you and your clinician.

There are new resource development and installation EMDR protocols that can help your process of discovering positive emotional states. While pain is certainly a motivator, it is far from the only one available to you.

As you process the different memories and explore the different beliefs your mother lived by new insights, emotions, and behaviors should spontaneously emerge. However, if there are any negative emotions that are stirred make sure to report them to your clinician. The EMDR work is a co-participation between the two of you. Just take it one step at a time.
