Sometimes the use of EMDR is like finishing the bottle of antibiotics. That is, it is necessary to complete treatment regardless of how well you are feeling in the meanwhile. The EMDR clinician will help the client to identify the targets to be processed. This includes earlier memories, present triggers, and templates for appropriate future actions. It is important for the client to enter life and report to the clinician if any other disturbance occurs. This might mean that there are other targets that need to be addressed. Sometimes new perspectives open up because the client receives different feedback than they have ever gotten before. For instance, someone who had always suffered from low self-esteem and was never able to succeed finds their true worth and begins to advance professionally. Suddenly they find themselves upset when they receive a raise or a promotion. This may be because earlier experiences led them to believe that if they were too successful they would be abandoned. The fear never came up before because they were never sufficiently successful. Now, it simply means that other targets have still to be processed. Ultimately, its simply important to notice what arises and stay present in your life. If you find that other things are emerging, then call the clinician for a consult. The door should never be shut as new growth experiences are always possible.
