Most people with dysthymia that I have worked with can quickly describe some family dysfunction, if nothing more than feeling they were "emotionally malnourished" as kids. There are negative views one holds of themselves, regardless, when one experiences a chronic depression. That is "I'm too....," or "I'm Not....," etc. EMDR should be helpful with all of this. I am too new to using EMDR to comment further, but I am optimistic given what I have seen, so far. Good luck.
