Good question. Before doing EMDR, I'd encourage you to have the same conversation with him. He should work with you to develop internal containment resources and an internal "safe place". Additionally, there is some basic screening he should do to make sure the usual protocol is the one he should use, or to know he should use another protocol for more complex trauma conditions. If you practice containment and safe place imagery, and if the two of you allow time at the end of your session to use those skills to "tuck in" any loose ends that may remain, you'll likely feel pretty good. Many EMDR clinicians offer clients the option of a double session the first time they use EMDR for a client, as the first one sometimes releases quite a bit of pressure, like a teakettle releases steam. That way, it improves the odds you will have enough time to complete your first chunk of processing. Many clients find that it is well worth any extra cost of that double session. Subsequent sessions are more likely to fit in the available time, in combination with the containment and safe place skills. Good luck!
