Yikes, Loren!... I've spent a lot of time in chat communities (mostly "Palace") and I have seen this tendency for people to quickly categorize and de-individualize others. But I've also seen people go out of their way to look past the avatars and the typed-text and the lack of f2f cues in order to discover the "real" person at the other end of all those hundreds of miles of wires and circuits. I don't think the human drive for genuine contact will ever get completely squashed by technology or modern times.
