It is seductive for teachers, as well as therapists, to think that clever, superficial techniques can overcome discouragement in students and clients. Adler's genius was his ability to find and deal with the root of a symptom. Anthony Bruck often quoted Adler's remark: "Instead of fanning away smoke, we must put out the fire."
