The poet, writer and editor William Ernest Henley (1849-1903) was crippled early in life by osteomyelitis. He was remarkably courageous, spirited and prolific writer. He wrote two books of poetry including "In Hospital" (1903). His friend was Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson modeled the character Long John Silver after Henley. His poem "Invictus" ends with the famous quote which Adler could have written, too: I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.
