For a current perspective on compensating for organ inferiority, take a look at "Obsession With Pumping Iron May Indicate Subtype of Body Dysmorphic Disorder" at http://www.psych.org/psych/htdocs/pnews/98-02-06/body.html . Quoting the article: "The physical risks of muscle dysmorphia are related primarily to substance abuse and secondarily to diet. Anabolic steroids - the most commonly abused drug by those with the disorder - pose a host of physical and psychiatric risks. Chronic use may increase susceptibility to cardiovascular disease. Psychiatric problems include depression upon withdrawal and hypomanic syndromes during use. Bodybuilders often use many other drugs, including psycho-stimulants; pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid hormones; laxatives; diuretics; and opiate agonist-antagonists, all of which pose dangers if used over an extended period of time."
