(quoting the Encyclopedia Britannica) "Psychodynamic therapies emphasize that insight is essential to lasting change. Insight means understanding how a problem emerged and what defensive purpose it serves." Classical Adlerian psychotherapy provides insight into the unconscious, fiction final goal of the individual, as well as other unconscious dynamics, including: private logical, style of life, safeguarding mechanisms, and antithetical scheme of apperception. We also trace the origin of these dynamics to the client's early childhood, illuminating the "childhood prototype" of the style of life. This offers a gold mine of insight that illustrates the unity of the personality, i.e., all thinking, feeling, and acting is guided by a single unconscious goal. Capitalizing on these insights, we utilize creative strategies for cognitive, affective, and behavioral change. Although we may use free association, especially for dream interpretation, we usually do not emphasize the technque. Classical Adlerian psychotherapy is a comprehensive, depth therapy, that is clearly psychodyanmic. There are some Neo-Adlerian approaches, that have abbreviated treatment, and have more of a cognitive-behavioral flavor.
