Your perception of a "laid back" California life style may be somewhat out of date, considering the current "wealth addiction" epidemic on the West Coast. Silicon Valley and San Francisco are becoming expensive playgrounds for the affluent, and uphill financial struggles for those in the middle and lower economic levels. There is a growing atmosphere, not of hedonism, but of greed and survival. There is vigorous striving, but frequently not for socially useful mastery, but for personal possession, privilege, and power, often at the expense of others. Read Philip Slater's "Wealth Addiction" and William Greider's "One World, Ready of Not." Sadly, the 'left" coast seems to be moving precariously to the "far right."
